Setting out to create the perfect system

Posted: 16th September 2012 by Osiris in Uncategorized

Hello! This is Zeke, a programmer here at Theta Studios. Lot’s of changes have been occurring internally here in the labs. We have all come to an agreement on a new way of doing things engine-wise. Without bogging this post down with details you may or may not be interested in, we can say that with the shiny, new, “perfect” system very little data will be sent over the network. How this impacts you is that things like replays are made easy, and will be very small in size, measurable in kilobytes. We are bypassing a lot of what Unity gives us, to create a perfect system that is most suitable for what we will be doing. We are still contemplating a good system for status effects – things that alter the properties and behaviors of units.

Also for any aspiring game developers, the term Iterative and incremental development  may be an interesting process to research for your team.

Although, the programmers weren’t the only ones to be doing things these past months. Hello, my name is Austin, I am the Creative Director here at Theta Studios, and we are finally ready to show off our first art to the world. However, this is only a sneak peak. So expect more in the future. For now, I present to you, some of the art of the Theta Studios team.

Before we get back to work, i’d like to announce a new project that the art team has begun. We’re setting out to create a graphic novel series, detailing the first contact between each of the four main factions in TRTS. All of this and more will be detailed in later posts. So, for the next update, expect more details on the graphic novel, as well as some concept-y goodness. See you next time.

Hexboard & Other News

Posted: 16th April 2012 by rabbitfang in Hexboard

We have not had a blog post in just over 2 months. We had hoped to have more news for everyone sooner, including a final name for TRTS, but alas, we did not. Unfortunately, we still have not picked out a name for the game. However, we have been hard at work and have been making progress in our game on both the programming, and design side of things. In a few days, our main site should soon be updated with a new look that will show off some of the artwork we have been producing.

We do have something for you guys to play around with, though. It is not the TRTS project, or anything related, but it is something that we have been working on the side to test out some ideas and methods on the small scale before bringing them to the larger scale. A short while ago, Unity Technologies (the company that produces the game engine that we are working with) opened up licensing for the Android and iOS platforms for a short amount of time, and we quickly snatched up several licenses for us to use and develop with. On the side, I have been working on what we call Hexboard, a musical application designed for mobile devices that features a unique synthesizer, with a unique layout. Each key on the ‘keyboard’ is a hexagon, with the board arranged so that you may easily move from one note to the next while creating wonderful music. It’s better suited for a touchscreen than a traditional piano is.

Hexboard is currently limited in its features. Currently, you cannot record or play back songs you have made, but that feature is planned. Also, you are currently limited to a sine wave sound, but that should soon change as well. We can’t wait to get these features in and to see what the community comes up with. In fact, we’d love to see any new ideas that you have! If you have any suggestions for the app, email us, or, better yet, create a topic on the forums!

In some other news, Theta Studios is now affiliated with The Shrouded. The Shrouded is  (currently) a one-man development team currently working on an Android multi-player card game. I can’t exactly say what it is at the moment, but I can tell you that it will be fun and fast paced. Go ahead and check them out.

What’s in a Name

Either you’ve looked way far back in the blog’s archives, or you’ve just caught us while we’re pretty young. Welcome to the website of Theta Studios! We’re a company that makes video games. We’ve published.. ermwellnothing so far. But we plan on making this new game called.. well.. it doesn’t have a name yet… TRTS. That’s what we call it for now. It stands for “Touch RTS.” Creative, we know.

…actually, we even had trouble settling on the name of TRTS! We also decided upon the name of Master Helm. Though, for the sake of clarity, I will refer to the project as TRTS. We’ve been working on this game for about 4 months now. You’d think we could come up with a name in 4 months. Everyone in Theta Studios is still in school, so don’t expect TRTS to be released next month, although, we should have a name by then. We hope.

With or without a name, TRTS will be a real-time strategy game, like Starcraft, Warcraft, and Age of Empires, to name a few. The key difference: TRTS will be an original, multi-platform, multiplayer game. It’s being developed in Unity, so if you are looking for support for a certain platform, check their site. Oh, and that means we will support iOS and Android, along with Windows and OSX. We probably won’t release a build for gaming consoles. Sorry.

If you want to know more about the game, take a look around the site! This site is for the studio itself, but since we are only working on one game, most of the content will be about TRTS. Check us out! Really.
